Samantha Winn

National Apprenticeship Week is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year and Monmouthshire is marking the occasion by talking to members of staff  who started with us as apprentices.

When did you start your apprenticeship?
I started my apprenticeship on August 14th 1989 – 4 days after my 16th birthday! The apprenticeship placed me in Office Services based at the then headquarters at Mamhilad.

Why did you decide to become and apprentice?
I decided to become an apprentice because I left school not knowing what I wanted to do… my parents saw this as a great opportunity.

How did your apprenticeship benefit you?
The apprenticeship benefitted me as it gave me the experience of working and earning (albeit £29.50 a week!!).

Where are you now?
Currently l still working for MCC as a Senior Licensing Officer.

Best thing about your job?
The best thing about my job is my colleagues, the working environment and the conditions.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years time?
In 5 years’ time l will hopefully still be working for MCC!

What would you say to someone considering an apprenticeship?
So someone considering an apprenticeship l would you say Go for it…. You get given many opportunities at a young age that can set you up for your working life.
